Klezmer music originated in the villages (‘shtetl’) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as „klezmorim”, performed at joyful events, particularly weddings. This is a mix of typical Jewish, Slavonic, Turkish and Gypsy melodies. Since the sixteenth century, lyrics have been added to the Klezmer music. With its distinctive sound, Klezmer music is unique, easily recognizable and widely appreciated, both by ‘ethnic insiders’ and by larger audiences from many different cultures. Klesmer music is unique, easily recognizable and widely appreciated all around the world.
