More about the Old Town:

It is because of the beauty of the Old Town with its original Medieval street layout, marvelous architecture and unique atmosphere that distinguishes Krakow from the rest of Poland.

The Royal Route - the highlight of the Old Town, which begins at St. Florian's Church in the northern part of the Medieval Old Town, continues along FloriaÅ„ska, Grodzka and Kanonicza Streets, and ends at the Wawel Castle – the old residence of Polish monarchs built in the 14th century. With a number of prominent historic landmarks on its way, The Royal Road is a true reminder of a golden age in Cracow's history – the former capital of Poland.

Some of the most noteworthy and famous landmarks and monuments standing on this historic path include:

  • A very well preserved Medieval fortified outpost Barbican at Basztowa Street.
  • The Florian's Gate – an impressive Gothic tower and the original entrance to the city.
  • The Main Market Square - the largest square in Europe, also known for St Mary's Church with its marvelous altar carved by Wit Stworz and the Sukiennice - the Renaissance Cloth Hall with fabulous arcades designed by Italian architect J.M. Padovano.
  • Most of the buildings surrounding the Main Square were erected hundreds of years ago. Some of them are home to The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków and International Cultural Centre.
  • The Wawel Castle and the cathedral located at the end of the Royal Route, are one of the most impressive buildings in Northern Europe. The castle boasts a fantastic collection of Dutch tapestries, war trophies, and Oriental Art. Royal Chambers and apartments, as well as the cathedral – the coronation and burial site of Polish kings are also a must to see.
