More about Nowa Huta:
Nowa Huta(meaning ‘new steelworks’), the construction of which started in 1949 as a part of Lenin’s communist six-year plan, is the youngest part of the city of Kraków. Initially intended to exist as a separate socialist town, in 1951 Nowa Huta was incorporated into Kraków as a new district. Being home to the Lenin Steelworks ISPAT - the biggest steel mill in Poland, this industrial area attracted the working classes and peasants from the whole region. With their arrival the first block of flats ‘Wanda’ was erected in 1949.
In the following decade more and more blocks of flats and factories were built. In 1977 the steel production reached over 6 millions tonnes and there were 38 000 industrial workers employed in both heavy and light industry.
Without doubt the highlights of Nowa Huta include the Central Square, Tadeusz Sendzimir Steel Mill, Ludowy Theatre, and Wanda estate – the best examples of socialist theme in architecture.
