Obwarzanek Museum

It’s not a pretzel. It’s not a bagel. It’s something entirely its own.

If you’ve ever walked the streets of Kraków, you’ve seen them for sure – golden, twisted rings of bread stacked high on blue carts at nearly every corner. That’s the obwarzanek, and it’s as krakovian as Wawel Castle itself.

Parboiling the dough before baking gives it its distinctive chewy texture and characteristic marks on the bottom. Since 2010, it has been listed in the EU Register of Protected Geographical Indications, meaning it can only be authentically produced in Kraków and the surrounding districts.

And there’s one place in the city where you can learn everything about it – and actually make one yourself.

The Living Obwarzanek Museum is located just under 300 metres from St. Florian’s Gate, tucked away at ul. Paderewskiego 4. Its mission is to bring the rich history and tradition of this iconic krakovian treat to life through inviting them to roll up their sleeves and become bakers themselves!

Ainhoa and Diven from Spain were kind enough to share their experience with us. Here are their impressions:

Our visit to the Obwarzanek Museum was a delightful and wonderfully engaging experience. We not only learned about the 600-year history of this traditional Cracovian bread, but also got to make it with our own hands, which made the visit especially memorable.

The workshop was both fun and informative, guiding us through each step of the process while highlighting the cultural significance of obwarzanek in Kraków. Our instructor was kind and patient, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.

Overall, it was a hands-on, educational, and delicious experience that we would highly recommend.
