The icon representing Black Madonna and the Christ Child arrived at the Pauline Monastery in Częstochowa on 31st August 1384. The centuries-old history of the icon makes it a witness to numerous social and political events full of fears, breakdowns, uprisings and hope. Miraculous powers were attributed to the icon because of some documented, yet inexplicable events. One of the examples was fire and plague which hit Częstochowa in 1622-1623, devastating the entire city, but leaving the Monastery and monks staying there without damage. The incredible history of the city and Black Madonna, which was the pilgrimage destination of famous Polish writers and kings, is a magnificent story of the icon and people from all around the world, praying to it in a desire for personal experience. Personal confessions made by the praying reflected their true eagerness to commend their life into the hands of Black Madonna.
The opportunity to experience these emotions and learn about the history is the primary idea behind the trip to Częstochowa. The itinerary of the guided walk at Jasna Góra Monastery includes a visit to the Basilica – the main shrine of the Monastery. It is possible to visit the 600th Anniversary Museum with the assistance of the guide and an accompanying person. The entry consists of three steps. The last stop will be the Chapel of the Miraculous Icon of Black Madonna, which embodies Marian devotions.
