After Nazi Germany attack on Poland in 1939 and the unsuccessful defense, the western territories of the country, where Oświęcim is located, were annexed by the Third Reich. The Nazis promptly changed the names of the Polish cities to German; for example, Oświęcim became Auschwitz and this is where the name of the camp originates from. The history of KL Auschwitz can be divided into two basic periods: between 1940 and 1942 and between 1942 and 1944. During the first period, the place served as a concentration camp, where the prisoners were held awaiting a slow death. During the second period, it was transformed into the largest center of instant and mass extermination of the Jews. Total extermination of the Jewish population, soon known as the Holocaust, was now the main goal of the Third Reich. It is estimated that within four years of operation, about 1.1 million prisoners were murdered in the camp, 90% of the victims being Jews who were brought to the camp from other countries occupied or otherwise controlled by the Reich. The victims would die terrible deaths – gassed in chambers or brutally punished for the slightest offense. The Nazis also conducted a series of cruel medical experiments on prisoners. The inhumane living conditions in the camp were similarly deadly to the detained. This place, with its horrifying history, shows the tragedy of the Holocaust in the most poignant and direct way.
