KL Auschwitz-Birkenau (Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau) was established as the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp. It was created in 1941 on the outskirts of Oświęcim, an area that had been annexed to the Third Reich. Altogether, over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives there. Most of them were Jews brought in from all over Europe. The goal of the camp was total extermination of the Jewish nation by means of mass displacement, systematic genocide and cruel medical experiments.
One of the first prisoners, and one of the few who managed to survive the period of captivity, was Marian Kołodziej, the author of the series of sketches «Frames of Memory. Labyrinths». He created several hundred drawings, which, in addition to an undeniable artistic value, are also the testimony of a victim and an eyewitness of the camp’s horrors. The participants of the Auschwitz-Birkenau tour “Through The Eyes of a Survivor”, in addition to visiting both parts of the camps, will see shocking sketches depicting visions of hunger, terror and ordeal, while also highlighting Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe’s heroic sacrifice that took place in the camp.
